“The Mighty One, God the Lord,
Has spoken and called the earth
From the rising of the sun to its going down.” (Psalm 50:1, NKJV)
Psalm 50 is included in the group of Psalms (Psalms 49-53) that contrast proper and improper approaches to God – not to trust in wealth (49), but to bring sacrifices based on covenant loyalty (50), especially a penitent spirit (51), because God rejects the wicked (52) and exposes their folly (53).
In a scene that displays his awesome majesty, God commands the whole world to stand before his judgment throne. He is the righteous judge of all the peoples of the world, and his first call to judgment concerns his own people, Israel. (50:1-6) He is the true God, the Supreme Ruler of the universe. As such, he has the right and power to call the world to judgment and to execute his will.
